Casual Luxury and Sweeping Views Dominate This Wine Country Home

Set on a 140-acre property in California’s storied Sonoma Valley, this spectacular home combines casual relaxation with a focus on nature. With views across the hills and vineyards of this famous wine region, the residence was designed and built to echo the natural elements from the surrounding landscape. Set in the shadows of a huge old oak tree, the four-bedroom home features walls of windows that capitalize on the views, angle of the sun and natural landscape.

Designed by Wade Design Architects in collaboration with Total Concepts and with Tim Clarke Interiors, the house has a magnificent blending of the outdoors and the indoors, both visually and physically. The owners wanted a very earthy vibe, and the architects certainly achieved that, starting with the exterior: It features natural stone and stained wood for a natural facade that blends with the landscape.

The massive oak tree shades the spacious deck and outdoor kitchen, which is adjacent to the indoor kitchen for convenience. The outdoor living space is ideal for family dining yet large enough to accommodate a large party.  In fact, the outdoor kitchen includes features an Argentinean grill and a wood-burning pizza oven in addition to the large gas grill. The beautiful dining table is on wheels and can easily roll out of the way for parties or family games on the deck.

This dreamy dining room is flooded with natural light from three sides, creating a one-of-a-kind atmosphere with sweeping views. A piece of the landscape takes center stage in the dining room as a table crafted from a tree that was on the property. Made Solid from Los Angeles created the piece. The natural, sustainable concept is also carried through to the Sol & Luna chairs, which are wrapped in leather. At the ceiling, a fixture by Lindsey Adelman hangs above the table, evoking a group of gathering clouds.

Bright and airy, the serene kitchen blends a farmhouse look with a touch of modern decor in the form of a shiny backsplash. The pendants have the silhouette of an acorn, perhaps a nod to the ancient tree in the yard. The Mater Terho pendants were created by Finnish designer Maija Puoskari, who used the natural theme to inspire these organically shaped lights.

The largely neutral living room is a cozy yet open space with its tall beamed ceiling with a skylight. Without a doubt, the stone fireplace is the focal point of the room and sets the tone for the space. The walls are painted in Ammonite by Farrow & Ball and create the perfect backdrop for the furnishings, which are a mix of custom and stock pieces. In addition to the custom sofa, the room includes a Holly Hunt coffee table, all anchored by a Turkish Kilim rug from Woven Accents.

With coffered ceilings, a fireplace and a knockout view, it could be hard to focus on work in this space! Clean lines dominate the room, beginning with the oak and leather desk that is from Lawson Fenning. The beautiful wooden ceiling is highlighted by a large brass pendant fixture from Urban Electric Co.

In a space that seems to flow from outdoors to in, groups of seating offer up a place to enjoy the open air and amazing views. Besides providing shelter from rain or sun, the porch has optional screens that can be rolled up in seasons when bugs are prevalent. The furnishings are luxurious but easy care and casual. The sectional from Restoration Hardware is upholstered in Sutherland fabric and made from durable weathered teak. Comfortable lounge chairs are by Gloster and an aged-brass side table from Lawson Fenning. The outdoor rug under the sofa grouping is by Marc Phillips.

One of the bedrooms has large, sturdy custom bunks beds, which are great for kids and can also accommodate extra adult guests as well. The deep blue painted fixtures are accented by more colorful bedding and a rug.

A custom walnut bed is the centerpiece of the master bedroom, which has a softer feeling thanks to the grasscloth style wallcovering from Phillip Jeffries. The bedside tables by Paul Frankl are a stunning vintage find and pair beautifully with the Native American textiles used on the bed. Minimalist wall sconces from Circa Lighting are by the bed and at the ceiling, Paul Marra’s hand-woven yarn light fixture adds another pop of color. The Turkish Kilim area rug from Woven Accents pulls the look of the whole space together. Below is the master bathroom, which is clean, uncluttered and very natural looking.

Its Sonoma stone construction matches the landscape and creates a unified look with the house itself. the same stone comprises the pool deck, which is paved with organically shaped stones. For poolside relaxation, Restoration Hardware’s teak chaise lounges, upholstered in outdoor fabric from Ralph Lauren, line the end of the pool.
