Casa del Viento – a house inspired by a legend

Not a lot of people can say that they have a house with a design inspired by a local legend. It’s something unusual and always unique. We found a wonderful example. This is Casa del Viento, a beautiful contemporary residence located in Tepoztlán, Morelos, Mexico. It occupies an area of 650 square meters and it was a project developed by A-001 Taller de Arquitectura.

Completed in 2013, the house was inspired by the legend of Tepozteco which is a volcanic formation found on the site. Featuring marks of wind and water erosion that were supposedly made by the people trying to bring down the god of wind called Ehécatl. Aside from the fact that the house is found on that particular site, there are no visible elements that would link the house to the legend. It actually looks like any other contemporary home.

It has a simple structure featuring geometric shapes and juxtaposed volumes. The exterior is white and defined by clean, straight lines. The cantilevered structures create transitional spaces between the interior and exterior zones. Another interesting detail is the fact that the house faces north, a tribute to Tepozteco. This orientation was also strategic. The residence thus offers beautiful 180 degree views of the surrounding area and the rock formations.

The materials used for this project are a mix of modern and regional and, in a way, this is a symbol of the cultural mix in the area. The house has concrete and limestone floors and walls and this gives it great insulation and makes it a low-maintenance structure.

It’s also a sustainable house as it features rainwater harvesting systems and solar heaters. If we also take into consideration that the house has a simple design, we can easily notice that it’s a wonderful contemplation space, with a relaxing and inviting atmosphere, a meditation terrace, beautiful balconies and nice and open views.{found on archdaily}.
