As per usual the architects and designers at studio Olson Kundig have been busy creating amazing projects lately. One of their latest masterpieces is an amazing California house located in Los Angeles, with a great view over the city. It’s an impressive house with over 1,400 square meters of living space and lots of outdoor areas that cover in total 646 square meters of space. Of course, size alone does not make a great project and there’s a lot going on here that deserves our admiration.
The infinity pool is the major outdoor feature and looks amazing
The house is structures on three floors, the ground level being the middle one. This is where the main social areas such as the kitchen, living and dining spaces and a guest suite are situated. Right below there’s a car gallery and a few recreational spaces such as a game room, a media room and also a wine cellar. The upper floor houses the bedrooms and a home gym.
The geometry of the house is interesting and the design direction is very simpleThe indoor-outdoor transitions are very smooth and seamless thanks to the retractable walls
A major source of inspiration came from the owner’s background who loves outdoor adventures. The architects thus incorporated this enthusiasm and energy into their design and created a house that offers its own special adventure. It’s important to note here that there are vast outdoor areas which make that possible. The backyard is big and has a beautiful infinity edge pool and there are also numerous terraces scattered around the house which being the outdoors in and minimize the boundaries between the interior and exterior gradually and naturally.
Huge windows frame the gorgeous views and invite them to become a part of the interior decor
The abundant natural light and vibrant views complement the simple and neutral indoor color paletteThe beautiful scenery can be admired from various different angles throughout the houseA big portion of the lower level is dedicated to a car galleryThe covered terraces feel like natural extensions of the indoor living areasThe infinity edge pool and the view beyond it can also be admired from inside the houseThe house is composed of several intersecting volumes which create organic transitionsBright pops of color are occasionally included in the design as a way to complement the surroundingsThe design manages to almost entirely eliminate the boundaries between the indoor and outdoor areas
