Located on Fire Island in New York, this A-frame beach house recently went through a renovation that completely changed its design. The project was conducted by Bromley Caldari Architects.
The project transformed the interior of the house and the main goal was to open up the space and red rid of the large spiral staircase that originally stood at the center and caused the bedroom areas to be small and dark.
The architects removed the spiral staircase and opted instead for a more sculptural design that molds between the restructured rooms and sits at different elevations. The result of this change was a three-story house with an open and bright interior able to make the most of the views.
The new sculptural staircase was the main requirement for the project and the clients were willing even to sacrifice the bedroom spaces to make sure the transformation suited their needs. As you can see, the staircase is now tucked into the large bay windows and even allowed for some small lounge spaces to be created in between the floors.
The main level contains a double-height living and dining area set along the north facade of the house. The open kitchen and the utility areas are on the south side of the house. They all basically share the same floor plan and the large windows let the views and natural light brighten up the space.
The kitchen is small but open. It has glass shelves that frame a small window and white counter tops. The lower cabinets contains almost all the storage space and the large countertop portion doubles as a bar.
The second floor is occupied by the master bedroom. It’s a space with full-height glass sliding doors and a balcony. All the wood on the ceiling and walls warm up the atmosphere and gives the room an inviting and relaxing mood.
On the third level there’s a second bedroom as well as a den which, if needed, could serve as a third bedroom area. The two rooms are connected by a walk-through bathroom with a glass shower enclosure, a glass-enclosed powder room and pocket doors at each end.
The den is small but welcoming and with stunning views. It’s a quiet, relaxing and peaceful space, ideal for reading a great book while enjoying the sun and the breeze.
This wonderful A-frame house also has a lovely deck and a pool area. All three floors look onto the pool and the beach and the ground level also has direct access to the outdoor spaces.
