A Colorful Shipping Container Workspace On A Concrete Manufacturing Site

What would the offices of a concrete manufacturer look like in today’s landscape? Well, if one prefers to stay true to the company’s spirit and be quirky at the same time, there’s a lot to learn from a very beautiful project completed by Balan and Nambisan Architects in 2019. They were approached by one of the leading manufacturers and suppliers of precast concrete slabs and pavers and asked to come up with a design for their new workspace in Bangalore, India. The design had to reflect the fact that this was a green tech company while at the same time incorporating key details relating to its area of expertise. As you can surely tell, the architects went with reclaimed shipping containers for this project.

A total of four shipping containers were used in this project. Their bright red, yellow and cobalt blue exterior contrast with the surrounding landscape, giving a bold look to this unique workspace and fitting quite nicely into this industrial construction site type of space. The containers are not all interlinked but rather spread throughout the site at different elevations and angles. They house workstations, a dining area, a couple of bathrooms and a few other functions including an outdoor deck. They’re organized around a courtyard with a water pond and they’re well insulated in order to remain cool during the summer. Looking at the big picture, this ended up being a perfect use of shipping containers in the context of a modern build.
